FZ1 Rally 2004 |
1800 miles for my long weekend. Probabally 400 of that were rain riding miles. I might have made it home yesterday(6/13) at around 3am but I found this road that looked good on the GPS somewhere in TN. I got off an exit and followed it. About 2 miles up this road (very twisty- going up a mountain) it said road construction and turned to gravel. I sat there for a minute and finally decided to keep going.
I went up about 20 of these gravel switch-backs and a kid in an old trans am comes flying up these gravel switch backs with tires spinning. He finally turned around to go down and I stopped him. I asked him how long the road stayed gravel. He said about 3 miles. Then I asked him if it actually went to a main highway. He said it did to through to TN116.
I said "Cool, I'm going to try it!" The local kid told me to be careful and went down the mountain.
I continued on and did about 3.5 miles extremely tight gravel switch backs. Un-believable! What have I gotten myself into? There was no way I would be able to get down if I decided to turn around. It would have been impossible to get down the gravel switch-backs without skidding down the mountain. A fully packed FZ1 was definately not the bike for this task.
It eventually turned back to (sort of) pavement and I kept going and going and going. I got so far in the middle of nowhere TN I couldn't believe it.
I made it back to I75 somehow and continued north again.

What you don't see is the house that is directly to the left of me. People are sitting on their porch and watching me taking this picture. I waved to them after I took the picture and they smiled and waved. They were quite happy people. |

There is a huge drop off just to the right of my bike. |

I think that was 116?! It turned out to be an outstanding road! Nobody was on it and it parts of it reminded me of Deal's Gap while others reminded me of the Cherohala Skyway |
Gas stop after I found I-75 again I was glad I found the interstate. I was starting to get worried that I'd be trapped in the middle of nowhere, TN |
Rest stop 10 miles South of Cincinatti, OH That there's gonna be a big storm. I'm really tired of riding through thunder storms at this point. I wait here for a bit then head out again. I later found out that I I managed to ride between 2 strong storm cells instead of riding through one. I was lucky. From here I rode all the way to Lebanon, IN. The skys cleared up pretty good after I waited out 1more passing strong storm somewhere in Central Indiana. I got a motel in Lebanon, IN. It was about 11:30pm |

|
| Rest stop on I-65 on Monday morning This is about 110 miles north of the hotel. I stayed at Sunday night. I knew I'd hit this one since I studied the weather channel forcasts before leaving the hotel. I actually got to this rest stop before the serious rain and lightning started |
sitting at a picnic table just watching the rain fall Lots of lightning too. It all cleared up in about 45 minutes. After this, I rode the rest of the 175 miles home without a problem. |
I left some peg scrapings on the dragon. |
| |
|
|
| Right peg |
hmm, I must have touched this down on one of those right handers |
That twisty mountain road I was mentioning previously You can see that I have the start of the Gravel switchbacks as a waypoint. I went from right to left on this map
