| Around Lake Superior 8/6/04 - 8/9/04

1650 miles for the long weekend. We rode clockwise around Lake Superior. I left for up north at 4:00pm 8/6. Stayed in Woodruff, WI Friday night. Saturday morning we rode up to the best place in the northwoods for breakfast - The Outpost Other detours we took on our way around the lake included Ely, MN. We rode up to Ely so that we could take Hwy 1 SE back toward lake Superior. People have told me that this part of Hwy 1 was the best road in MN. I just had to ride it since I was in the area.
By Saturday evening we made it to Thunder Bay, ON and decided to call it a night.
Sunday morning we left Thunder Bay. We had lunch at an A&W in Marathon,ON and by Sunday evening we made it all the way to Sault Ste Marie, MI. After dinner Sunday evening we decided that we weren't done riding so we kept going west on hwy 28 in Upper MI. This took us through parts of Hiawatha National Forest and Lake Superior State Forest in the dark. Finally we decided to call it a night near the intersection of hwy 28 and 117 in MI. I can't see the name of this town on the map but the one closest to it is Newberry, MI. We found a very dumpy motel there. It had ummm.. character. yeah, that's it!
Monday morning we awoke from our dumpy motel sleep to a nice light rain. The rain had let up a bit as we left. After an hour's worth of riding it was basically dry. I found a Big Boy to stop at for breakfast in Manistique, MI. The breakfast buffet was great. About halfway through breakfast we noticed that it started raining outside again. This time it was pretty heavy rain with occasional thunder and lightning. It seems any trip that I take is not complete unless I go for a ride in a thunderstorm. We left from our breakfast stop in the nice thunderstorm. The rain let up and eventually stopped around 20 or so miles later. No big deal. After that, we filled up with gas and rode the the interstate the rest of the 200 miles from North of Green Bay home to Milwaukee. By 2:30pm I was back home. And that's all folks!
